Great Websites: BBC
This is a tough one. It's more of a monolith than a website. Also, having worked there I know a fair bit about it's in-efficiencies.
That said, what a remarkable website. If the UK internet only consisted of the BBC website, it would probably be OK.
It's scores massively high on breadth and quality of content. It also, actually scores high on design/usability. The new Home Page and the recent iPlayer are unquestionably first class.
I think it falls down on cohesion. You do find yourself asking WHY? The answer is usually because they have the content and the money to cover virtually everything. I'm not sure this is a good enough reason to cover everything.
The /sections of the BBC are probably the areas that create concern for me. News, Sport, Children's, Radio and TV Programme websites and iPlayer work for me. I think the other areas at the most fundamental level needed sorting out and making more consistent and coherent.
I take it back!
Dan Taylor alerted me to the news BBC /Topic pages.
They look really good at first scan.
Well done! New verdict: 9/10 :-)
