Finance Competitors
Been meaning to do this again, 3 months in. Now what do I think of these bully boys?
Dis is Money:
What's for sure is Fool's layout is clearer - simpler - lighter.
ThisMoney is very busy and they have an awful lot on their homepage.
It's probably got its eye on quality editorial, like Fool, its got a heritage from the tabloids - The Mail....
Their product areas are run by moneysupermarket.com
Some ok things (javascript tabs, most popular comments from the boards.)
One of the longest homepage pages on the internet.
Verdict - I wouldn't go here, would you?
The Competition looks like this (moneysaving expert and moneysupermarket not on here.)
Moneysupermarket:
What hits you first is that is is very functional and well organised:
I'd say its not at all sticky though and it doesn't have the tone or voice that the TMF has.
Areas of the site are very much about providing an offline service. There's an assumption with mortgages that you exit the site very quickly to deal with an advisor. What's interesting is that they look after mortgages themselves, they are a broker. A finance company essentially:
What I do like though, is the product reviews. It's not zuzzid, but it is interesting:
Money Saving Expert:
The first thing to say about this is that you can't deny its tone of voice. Martin Lewis is the consumer champion. It's like the Sun to This Is Money's Daily Mail. Not by cup of tea but the voice is very strong and it is very obvious what this site is all about:
Tesco Compare:
Sky Money Channel.
This site does the basic things quite well, it is clear and, on the surface at least, straightforward to navigate. Not sure about the colours or the rather thin layer of design style. It's quite generic and feels like what it is, a channel among many channels on a big web portal.
I do like the life-stages breakdown though:
